On Friday December 4, 2015, Detroit Young Professionals (DYP) partnered with the North End Youth Improvement Council for their annual Adopt-A- Child Celebration.
Adopt-A-Child for Christmas Program alone brings together many thousands of volunteers and parents, who give to over 3,000 low- income youth recipients, aging from newborn to 12 years. At this festive outing the youth are influenced by their evening’s mentors while receiving gifts of warm clothing and toys. The mentors provide the young children guidance through conversation and interest, positive direction and concern.
DYP’s Community Outreach Chair, Shannon Smith, graciously coordinated DYP’s participation, ensuring that each charitable participant was paired with one of the deserving children. Thanks to his efforts and the generosity of the DYP network, 28 families received warm coats, clothing, and toys for the holidays!
“This year I had the opportunity to help coordinate the event for DYP. There were 22 DYP members who adopted a child, and I was able to capture some of the moments. The event was held at COBO hall and featured thousands of children and hundreds of organizations who also adopted children. I want to thank all of the members who signed up and contributed to the event. A picture is worth a thousand words and I couldn’t help but notice there was a plethora of smiling faces in Cobo Hall on this day.”

DYP has participated in this annual event for the past 3 years, each time reaching the maximum allotment of registrations. The overwhelming desire to help bring Christmas to these wonderful children is what truly fuels the program year after year.
